Story

Wake the Mine

Hob sends Kip to relight the out-of-season hearthsalt mine ahead of the Kilnrath surveyor: the third level, the first interior, and the first real dark.

Notes

The mine is not worked in summer, so nobody has been up for weeks and its lamp chain is cold. Kip is the one who goes because lighting is his job and the surveyor cannot see the workings without light.

Kip runs through the village in daylight, climbs the Mine Road, passes the gate, and the dark begins at the adit. He plays the level with the pole only: its caged light is why he needs no lantern, and its mister is the tool he already knows.

He lights the chain down through the workings and clears what moved in over the empty months: drift rats and pit timber voles, with hearth newts clinging above the wet workings and chamber approach. At the wet bottom he meets Old Siltclaw, an oversized crawfish that came up the flooded drain and partly chokes the pump intake, as the regional boss. Boars and moths stay on the surface.

The deep-hearth door is seen, shut, and left shut. The village does not cross it and the deal has not yet asked anyone to.

The miner's pick is found near the end, after the dark stretches, as the weapon for what comes next.

Leveling is introduced afterwards at the village hub, not inside the mine.
