Story
The Motherlode Conflict
The Cinderfolk village is trapped between Kilnrath extraction and Seraphate denial of a deep breathsalt deposit.
Notes
Both outside powers need coherent motives; every major course should protect something and destroy something.
The imperial conflict should enter Kip's life after the Goat Fair, but the exact incident remains open.
The Cinderfolk-Kilnrath working relationship goes forward with real benefits; increasingly intensified mining is the planned source of later trouble.
The Kilnrath learned of the village when the exiled seller sold a small sample in a far town and alluded to a whole mine of it; they came exploring by the Long Road with vehicles, saw a working but comparatively primitive mine, and proposed a mutually useful arrangement: tools that make mining faster and safer, a fair price for the surplus, and the trade route as the sweetener.
The story runs in under a year. The deal is struck in summer, the mine is worked out of summer, and the motherlode's winter self-sealing gives the Kilnrath a reason to dig deeper and faster as the season turns.
Pressure builds through three channels: the Kilnrath discovering how much hearthsalt there really is, Seraphate tension arriving as news on the trade road, and the winter seal. The deep-hearth door seen shut in the mine is the threshold the escalation eventually crosses.
Working level cadence: Lamp Road, the goat chase, waking the mine, the village hub with first leveling, Lamp Road's second shift, then out of the valley.
